Dear Families,

I want to thank you all for a wonderful year!  It has been a privilege teaching the city’s best and brightest first graders!  Special thanks to all of the families who came out to Yards Park the last day of school to celebrate our year together in first grade.  It was a great way to end the school year!  I absolutely love my class calendar and all the beautiful end-of-year cards and gifts. I’m going to miss seeing you all next fall, but I promise I will be around as often as I can!

I know that many of you have big plans for the summer, however, I want to encourage you to incorporate some academic review to keep your child’s skills fresh for second grade.  Fortunately, we have a few resources to help make your summer fun and learning-filled!

As you know, reading is one of the most important skills for kids to practice over the summer.  At the bottom of this page I have listed the Brent Recommended Summer Reading list for Preschool through first grade as well as possible Reading Response topics. Please support your child in recording his/her summer reading at the Brent On-Line Reading log: http://tinyurl.com/BrentReading

I’ve also included the first grade “Must Know Words” List and 2 pages of suggestions for practicing/reviewing these words at home.  Students should be able to recognize these words and spell them correctly in their writing!

Finally, as a reminder, your child’s IXL password is still good during the summer. Students should continue to practice/review all of the Level C (First Grade) skills and make sure they are fluent with counting up and back to add and subtract. The “Addition Skill Builders” and “Subtraction Skill Builders” are particularly helpful preparation for second grade.

If you need anything over the summer or have questions, please feel free to contact me.  I hope you have an enjoyable summer vacation and please keep in touch!

~Mrs. O’Rourke
